Determined to retake the university entrance exam to try my best
Sharing with a reporter from Vietnam Education Electronic Magazine, Man Van Tien said: “When I entered university, I did not set the goal of becoming valedictorian. When I learned that I was one of the 100 honored valedictorians, I felt very honored and proud. I want this title to become a stepping stone for me to strive for further goals.”
It is thought that the valedictorian is someone who always has advantages on his or her academic journey, but Tien's story does not follow the usual progression. Having had a passion for healing and saving people since childhood, Tien dreamed of becoming a doctor. However, I did not pass the entrance exam to my dream school in the first year of university admission.
Tien shared: “I am a university retake candidate. Before studying at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Hanoi National University, I passed the entrance exam to another medical school but did not attend.
Looking back at my time in 9th grade as well as my 3 years of high school, I feel like I didn't try hard enough.
The confusion about direction and goals makes me not clear what I need to strive for? There was even a time when I wanted to change schools even though I was studying in the Math class at Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted.
In all 3 years of high school, only at the end of 12th grade did I really focus on studying. Even though I accelerated quickly, I still couldn't keep up. Therefore, I am determined to retake the exam to try my best.”
Overcoming the objections of his family and friends, Tien decided to study for another year to retake the exam. At that time, Tien reviewed Math and Chemistry through lectures on the internet, and for Biology he went to school outside.
Talking about his fate as a dentist, Tien humorously said that “the profession chooses people”. Tien's interest in the field of study grew through his teachers' lectures.
Tien passionately said: “We also started with basic subjects such as Anatomy, Pathology, Biophysics, Pathophysiology… to gain basic knowledge and understand the pathological mechanisms of organs.” Go deeper into your specialization.
Studying Dentistry is not limited to dental work. Furthermore, doctors do not always treat patients without underlying medical conditions. For example, people with diabetes who have teeth extracted have a higher chance of infection. It seems easy, but problems with teeth, jaws, and face also have many complications.”
Tien believes that studying Dentistry is a combination of being a doctor, a dentist, and even an artist. Right from the first year of school, students have to learn how to file and sculpt teeth. The work requires meticulousness, ingenuity and patience.
Students will draw the shape of the tooth according to the anatomical structure on paper, and cut the tooth on wax in a rectangular block. After mastering, in the following years of study, students will practice grinding on real teeth.

It is known that Tien majored in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, intervening in cases such as maxillofacial trauma; cysts and tumors in the maxillofacial area; Cleft lip and palate deformity surgery…
This challenging major once made Tien feel overwhelmed, but he did not give up and still wanted to become an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. This is also the thing that makes me most proud of my 6 years of medical school, because I was not discouraged and steadfast in my original goal.
Tien's perseverance is also recognized by Dr. Nguyen Tan Van, head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Teacher Van expressed: “Tien is not necessarily an exceptionally intelligent person, but he is extremely diligent, hard-working, and eager to learn.
At first, my clinical progress was somewhat slower than other students. At that time, I told Tien that maybe he should study another major if he continued to fall behind like this.
It seemed that Tien would be discouraged, but on the contrary, he was more focused and made clear progress. Therefore, I appreciate Tien's efforts to pursue his career.”
It is known that Tien participated in 2 rounds of humanitarian surgery for children at Hospital E (coordination between Hospital E, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Odonto-Stomatology – University of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Hanoi National Assembly and Operation Smile organization).
Doctor, Doctor Nguyen Hong Nhung, the supervisor of Tien's graduation thesis and also a participant in the above humanitarian surgery, shared: “For a long time, there were very few students of the Department of Odonto-Stomatology who wanted to Going deeply into surgery is difficult and strenuous, but since choosing his specialty, Tien has always been patient and shown a desire to learn.
I support teachers in the department to go to medical examinations and assist in surgeries. There were times when he was studying hard for exams, but during the day, Tien still followed his teachers into the operating room. I appreciate Tien's seriousness in studying and will.
Studying Medicine has never been easy. In particular, choosing the surgical path is even more thorny, but for Tien, I believe that he will succeed and will be able to go further. Holding a scalpel in hand, the mission is health and human life, so we need people with qualities like Tien.”

Search more than 1,000 documents to synthesize in research and complete the thesis
When he started university, Tien also heard many people talk about studying Medicine being difficult, but Tien felt that this 6-year period was actually not that long. Knowledge in the field of Medicine for 6 years is definitely not enough, this is just the foundation for the next stage of learning.
Sharing his study tips, Tien confided that he didn't have any special tips, he only paid attention to taking notes. To explain, the amount of knowledge is too much to remember, so I often store documents in both paper and electronic form. There are documents that are not used immediately but will be needed at some point. Therefore, it is essential to organize and store documents so that you can find them again when you want.
In addition, Tien also studied with friends, learned from people's practical experiences, and consulted keywords to look up and learn for himself.
Instead of just memorizing, Tien aims to study deeply to master basic knowledge. This is also a premise for you to develop critical thinking. Tien affirmed that, first of all, we must have a solid basic knowledge to have a basis for evaluating new knowledge. If your understanding is narrow, it will limit your ability to detect problems.
In particular, the male valedictorian emphasized the importance of goals. Tien expressed: “Compared to the time before, when I was in college, I had a clear direction to pursue. The persistence of my goals is also the reason that helps me maintain motivation. I don't want to waste time like I did in the past, I want to study for a profession, to become a doctor. My future plan is to try to pass the school's medical residency exam.”

It is known that Tien's graduation thesis was entirely in English with the topic: “Overview study on the results of surgical treatment of jaw bone ameloblastoma”.
Doctor, Doctor Nguyen Hong Nhung shared: “As the person directly instructing Tien's thesis, I am very satisfied with this student. The topic I gave him was very broad. Initially, he It seemed vague but he didn't give up. After I gave him some research directions and illustrative examples, Tien tried to do it himself and kept me updated on the progress.
I'm really surprised at your progress. Tien absorbs quickly and flexibly, proactively searches for more than 1,000 valuable documents to synthesize in research and complete the thesis. I know sometimes I'm a bit difficult, but because I expect a lot from you, I realize that Tien has the qualities to become a good doctor and surgeon.”
As head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Nguyen Tan Van added: “In the medical industry we have no right to make mistakes, for surgeons this must be given top priority.
Therefore, I always teach students from the basics, even though you may feel that it is not important, we must be careful from the first small things. This will create habits, not allowing mistakes in big things.
To become a good surgeon, you must combine many factors, not only in expertise but also in life skills, communication skills… First of all, surgeons need to have general knowledge, comprehensive, in addition to specialized knowledge to diagnose diseases.
Surgeons also need to evaluate the patient, consider how they will tolerate the measures and then find the appropriate treatment.
As for life skills, you must collect them from reality to understand the patient, know the patient's thoughts and aspirations, so that the patient can put their trust in you.”

Sharing with reporters from Vietnam Education Electronic Magazine, Professor, Dr. Trinh Dinh Hai, Head of the Department of Odonto-Stomatology, said that in 2017, the Department of Dentistry (at that time was the Department of Dentistry) recruited students for the course. Firstly.
In 2022, the subject will be upgraded to a faculty after the University of Medicine and Pharmacy is established based on the inheritance of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of Hanoi National University.
The Department of Dentistry currently has 9 departments: Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery; Department of Orthodontics; Department of Endodontics; Department of Periodontology; Department of Dental Prosthodontics; Department of Implantology; Department of Basic Dentistry; Department of Community Dentistry; Department of Pediatric Dentistry.
Before enrolling students in the first course, the leaders of Hanoi National University assigned the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy at that time, a 30 billion VND project to train Odonto-Stomatology doctors.
This 30 billion VND is reserved for clinical simulation laboratory (31 simulators). Before students go to hospitals to practice, they practice skillfully in a simulation lab under the guidance of instructors.
In addition, the Department of Dentistry also has a pre-clinical practice area (9 sets of dental chairs) and an Oral and Maxillofacial clinic (30 sets of dental chairs).
In addition to having a solid grasp of professional knowledge, Professor, Dr. Trinh Dinh Hai emphasized the importance of professional skills and clinical skills for maxillofacial doctors, being rigorous right from the start. just started.
Students of the department must undergo classes on sculpting, drawing and painting teeth to be skillful right from the first year of school. Students who are smart but have clumsy and unsophisticated hands will not be suitable to pursue a career as a Dentist.
