Dr. Vu Van Vien, Head of the Faculty of Tourism at Ha Long University, has just qualified for the title of Associate Professor in 2024, becoming the first associate professor of Quang Ninh province in the field of Culture and Tourism.

Teacher Vu Van Vien, born on May 28, 1978, is a son of his hometown Quang Ninh, where he nurtured his deep love and passion for the tourism industry. Right from high school, a student named Vien dreamed of exploring famous landscapes, interacting with friends from all over the world and contributing to promoting the beauty of his homeland. That was the fate that brought Mr. Vien to teaching in the field of tourism.

This is also a way for him to realize his dream of tourism, but also a way to help him contribute to the development of Quang Ninh's tourism industry, inspiring and training the younger generation, who will continue to raise the bar. Homeland travel on the world map.

The journey of work and research is associated with the development of Quang Ninh Tourism industry

Teacher Vu Van Vien shared that since he was in high school, he has been fascinated by the tourism industry. In the young mind of that time, traveling was not only an opportunity to go to many places and explore beautiful landscapes in Vietnam, but also a door to reach out to the world and interact with international friends. However, in the late 1990s, the tourism industry in Vietnam and Quang Ninh was still very primitive, with very few schools providing training in this field. Therefore, choosing to study Tourism Management at Oriental University (Hanoi) marked the beginning of his journey to pursue his passion.

Summary of Mr. Vu Van Vien's work process:

From October 2003 – September 2006: Head of Reception Department, Faculty of Hotel Business Administration, Ha Long College of Culture, Arts and Tourism

From October 2006 – August 2009: Deputy Dean of Hotel Business Administration, Ha Long College of Culture, Arts and Tourism

From September 2009 – September 2010: Deputy Head of Department of Travel Business Administration, Ha Long College of Culture, Arts and Tourism.

From October 2010 – September 2014: Head of Department of Travel Business Administration, Deputy Secretary of Party Cell, Vice Chairman of School Union, Ha Long College of Culture, Arts and Tourism

From October 2014 – April 2017: Deputy Faculty of Tourism, Party Committee member, Party cell Secretary, Ha Long University; Member of the Executive Committee of Quang Ninh Tourism Association.

From February 2018 – to present: School council member; Dean of the Faculty of Tourism; Party member, Party cell secretary, Ha Long University; Vice Chairman of Quang Ninh Tourism Association; Vice Chairman of the Tourism Training Club of the Association of Vietnam Universities and Colleges.

Quang Ninh, his hometown, was then famous for Ha Long Bay, Hon Trong Mai and many monuments and landscapes, but the local tourism industry still had a lot of untapped potential. After graduating, he had the opportunity to work in travel companies in Hanoi and thought about returning to Mong Cai to develop a career in the hotel industry, where tourism is growing strongly. However, a special chance opened up a teaching path that he did not expect.

At that time, Ha Long College of Culture, Arts and Tourism, which did not yet have an official tourism training program, began to cooperate with major universities to deploy short-term courses on tourism. this industry. It was the school principal who sparked the idea of tourism training in Quang Ninh, along with advice from a family friend, who inspired and encouraged him to switch to becoming a lecturer. He realized that teaching tourism not only helps him continue his passion for exploration but is also an opportunity to spread love for his homeland, passing fire and knowledge to the younger generations.

Another personal factor also contributed to guiding his path. His partner, also from Quang Ninh, decided to return to his hometown to work in the banking industry after graduating. Because he wanted to be close and build a career in the place where they were both attached, he chose to return to Quang Ninh. This decision is not only a career choice but is also associated with family feelings and his relationship with his homeland.

Teacher Vu Van Vien recalls that at that time, tourism was not recognized as a promising profession. But now, when countries around the world are focusing on green and sustainable economic development, the tourism industry has proven its important role. According to him, tourism not only brings economic benefits but also ensures environmental protection, exploits resources in a harmonious way and preserves the original values of nature – something that heavy industries do not. can do. It is this development that has affirmed the worthy position of the tourism industry in the modern economy and social life.

Mr. Vu Van Vien began his teaching career at Ha Long College of Culture, Arts and Tourism in 2003, and in just a short time, he took on the role of department head and deputy dean of the Faculty of Management. hotel treatment. To meet the need to improve training quality, he decided to study for a master's degree in Tourism Studies at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Hanoi National University) in 2006. The unremitting efforts helped him continue his studies as a graduate student in 2012, thanks to the support of the school board of directors and Quang Ninh province.

One of the great advantages in his educational path is the encouragement from the Party Committee and the school's board of directors, especially the fact that Quang Ninh province sponsors all expenses for graduate studies. This shows the province's special attention to human resources but also affirms its investment strategy in high-quality human resources.

In the context of Quang Ninh tourism growing strongly and becoming a leading destination in Vietnam, the province has paid great attention to improving the quality of human resource training, a decisive factor for sustainability and development. long-term tourism industry. This is one of the great advantages that helps teachers improve their qualifications and contribute to the development of the province's tourism industry.

Mr. Vien added that one of the great advantages is that approaching reality early on has helped him accumulate valuable lessons and come up with practical solutions. Thanks to that, teachers can see more clearly the current state of tourism in general and the problem of tourism human resources, with a detailed, realistic and close perspective, and at the same time offer highly feasible solutions to the situation. tourism model in Quang Ninh province, this has helped me a lot in my scientific research.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Vien said, “During the process of teaching and scientific research, the two provincial-level projects that he carried out were “Building a traditional craft village model associated with provincial tourism development.” Quang Ninh” and “Research on building a rural agricultural tourism model in Quang Ninh province” are two research topics that I am interested in. These two studies have contributed to creating new products, enriching the types of tourism in Quang Ninh province.”

Mr. Vien analyzed that Quang Ninh tourism stands out for the sea, spirituality and relaxation, but today's tourist needs have changed. Tourists want to experience unique cultural values, close to nature and community. The topic of traditional craft villages aims to develop these craft villages into tourist destinations, where tourists can visit and interact with the local community. The topic of rural agricultural tourism focuses on combining agricultural products with tourism, creating new experiences for tourists.

Both projects not only help diversify tourism products but also contribute to improving value for local people, especially in shifting occupational structure from agriculture to services and tourism. What I feel most excited about is that these studies have helped improve income and create jobs for people, especially in remote areas and ethnic minority communities.

Mr. Vien expressed his desire to spread awareness about tourism development and economic restructuring to people in remote areas, because tourism is an integrated economic sector, capable of promoting development. development of many other industries.

Passion for discovery and desire to create

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Vien, commented that Quang Ninh province's tourism human resources have now made remarkable progress compared to 10 years ago. One of the important factors contributing to this development is the birth of Ha Long University in 2014. The school has provided a formal, standardized and comprehensive training environment for tourist human resources. calendar, not only serving Quang Ninh province but also neighboring provinces. The school has trained tourism bachelors with many different professions, helping to create human resources with strong professional skills, good service attitudes and extensive general knowledge, meeting the high requirements of customers. tourists in the context of international integration.

At the same time, Quang Ninh province also has great advantages thanks to many border gates connecting international visitors, especially Chinese visitors. This creates a realistic “collision” environment for tourism human resources, helping them accumulate valuable experience in welcoming and serving guests. Quang Ninh also has many diverse tourism products, from yachts, resorts, community tourism, agricultural tourism to spiritual tourism, helping tourism human resources have the opportunity to interact and learn in a short time. Rich and challenging environment.

However, to meet the increasing demands from high-end customers and investors, international brand hotels, resorts, and tourism human resources in Quang Ninh province need to continue efforts to cultivate knowledge and overcome some current weaknesses.

One of the issues that Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Vien believes needs to change is the working attitude of tourism human resources. Young people today are born and raised in a more complete environment than previous generations, and are well cared for by family and society. This sometimes makes them not really aware of the importance of serving others in the tourism industry. Studying tourism is not only learning a profession but also learning how to serve customers professionally and to international standards. This is an important factor to improve the quality of tourism services in Quang Ninh province in particular and Vietnam in general.

Besides, another requirement for tourism human resources is to increase the application of information technology. In particular, in the context that international travel companies, hotels and resorts are increasingly developing, access to and exploitation of technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), in service is increasingly important. Customer service is essential. Young people in the tourism industry need to expand their knowledge and create new ideas, design unique tourism products, in accordance with the increasing demands of customers.

Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Van Vien also emphasized the need to diversify foreign languages in the tourism workforce. With the trend of increasing the number of Halal and Muslim tourists entering Vietnam and Quang Ninh province, the tourism industry needs to quickly upgrade services and train human resources with enough knowledge to serve customers of this group. This is a great opportunity for Quang Ninh and Vietnam to enhance tourism value and attract more international tourists.
