Study Southeast Asia to gain rich knowledge
Speaking to reporters of the Vietnam Education Electronic Magazine, Dr. Ho Thi Thanh, lecturer of the Department of Southeast Asian Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, said: “Students studying Southeast Asian Studies will be trained in a “three-legged stool” style. That is, students will be formed in a research and thinking method, equipped with a basic knowledge system about Southeast Asia and trained to be able to use foreign languages.”

Previously, Southeast Asian Studies was a major under Oriental Studies. Since 2018, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, has separated into a separate major under the Faculty of Oriental Studies (currently, the Faculty of Oriental Studies has 3 majors for undergraduate training: Southeast Asian Studies, Oriental Studies and Japanese Studies).
The school's decision to train as an independent major shows the importance of Southeast Asian studies to the development of society.
Ms. Thanh added that when it was a major in Oriental Studies, students did not have a clear orientation towards Southeast Asian Studies. However, when it was separated into a separate major, students who chose Southeast Asian Studies had a deeper understanding of this major and had an assessment to know if they were suitable for the training orientation.
The training objective of the Southeast Asian Studies major of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi is to provide bachelors with a general knowledge base in social sciences and humanities, with comprehensive, systematic, and modern knowledge of the ASEAN bloc and ASEAN countries in areas such as history, economics, society, law, political institutions, international relations of the region, culture of Southeast Asia and ASEAN countries; and issues related to Vietnam.
In addition, students are also equipped with specialized foreign language knowledge (5 specialized foreign language subjects) and can choose to study 1 of 2 native languages (Thai or Indonesian, because these two countries have a deep cooperative relationship with Vietnam, opening up many career opportunities).
In particular, by studying this program, students will develop creative entrepreneurial thinking, have the ability to study and research at a higher level and be responsible for promoting the country's integration in the region and the world.
Different from the training goals of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City Open University focuses on approaching Southeast Asian Studies from the perspective of area studies.
Dr. Dang Nang Hoa, Head of Southeast Asian Studies Department, Ho Chi Minh City Open University said: “Based on the potential that the school has, we always try to help students grasp the most basic and in-depth knowledge about the study area”.

The difference of the training program compared to other programs (strength) is that the training program is designed with an in-depth focus on Southeast Asian culture and tourism.
Accordingly, learners will be provided with basic knowledge about geography, history of formation and development of Southeast Asia, economy, culture of Southeast Asia, politics – diplomacy, religion, lifestyle and national identity of Southeast Asian countries, ASEAN community law, relations between countries in Southeast Asia, understanding similarities and differences.

Learners will apply that knowledge to career fields such as tourism, international relations, business, and communications.
In addition to English, learners will be exposed to one of four languages: Chinese, Japanese, Thai or Indonesian at a conversational level.
In addition, learners are equipped with necessary professional skills such as reasoning, thinking and problem solving skills, practical skills in Southeast Asian tourism culture, communication skills in a multicultural environment, management and organizational skills.
At the same time, the school's training program also requires learners to be autonomous, independent, self-developed and serve the community.
According to Dr. Le Xuan Truong, Vice Principal of Ho Chi Minh City Open University, since its establishment, the school has identified four important training areas to serve the country's human resources, including: Information Technology (now called Information Technology), Business Administration, English and Southeast Asian Studies. Ho Chi Minh City Open University is also the first unit in the country to train in Southeast Asian Studies.

Over 34 years of establishment and development, the school has always focused on improving the quality of its teaching staff, continuously reviewing the training program, and adjusting it to suit the practical needs of learners.
The school assesses that Southeast Asian Studies is always a major that is in high demand by organizations, unions, and businesses. The number of students registering is increasing and the scores are increasing.
Southeast Asian Studies – a promising but under-exploited field of study
Discussing job opportunities, Dr. Ho Thi Thanh said: “On the international level, Southeast Asia has an impact on all areas such as economy, security, politics, culture, and society.
Leaders in Southeast Asian countries themselves recognize the importance of greater engagement and commitment to cooperation in various fields.
Grasping that reality, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi focuses on training in Southeast Asian Studies, providing a team of intellectual human resources for the labor market and, above all, contributing to the integration and development of Vietnam in the ASEAN community.

Ms. Thanh added that about half a century ago, research on Southeast Asia flourished in Europe and America, but this trend is increasingly shifting to Asia in general and Southeast Asia in particular.
Southeast Asian studies training industry is established in many countries and is very developed, such as Singapore, Thailand or the Philippines.
By the end of 2015, the ASEAN community was established, marking an important milestone for the development of Southeast Asian studies.

Discussing job opportunities for students majoring in Southeast Asian Studies, the Head of the Southeast Asian Studies Department, Ho Chi Minh City Open University said: “When studying the politics, culture, history, economy, and international relations of countries in the Southeast Asian region in the current integration period, it is easy to see that Southeast Asian Studies plays an extremely important and extremely necessary role.
If you want to do business, trade or cooperate, you must understand the culture and history of that region. This field of study meets the goals and human resource needs in the current context.”
The Vice President of Ho Chi Minh City Open University said that graduates of Southeast Asian Studies at Ho Chi Minh City Open University can take on jobs related to tourism, foreign affairs, consulates in other countries, museums, and ethnic groups; specialists in design, operation, and tour guiding for travel companies; consulting assistants for businesses operating in countries in the Southeast Asian region; participate in projects, international organizations, and the Government; participate in teaching at research institutes, universities, and colleges researching Southeast Asia.

Tran Thi Khanh Vi, valedictorian of the Southeast Asian Studies double major in 2023, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, also shared about the major: “I happened to know about the Southeast Asian Studies major during the admissions fair. I really like learning foreign languages, and I realized that in the program I could learn both English and Indonesian; and the school's tuition fee was lower than the average, so I decided to study this major.
I wish the curriculum taught more English, requiring students to have English proficiency right from the start of their studies, so they would be more competitive in the future job market.
Students should also attend seminars to broaden their life experiences, professional experience, and acquire new knowledge.
Based on your experience and abilities, studying this major can earn you a livable salary.”
Sharing about her upcoming plans, Khanh Vi is preparing to study abroad after receiving the KNB scholarship from the Indonesian Government.
