Lãnh đạo nhiều trường THPT khuyên học sinh sớm đổi tổ hợp nếu có nhu cầu

According to the teaching plan of the 2018 general education program, from grade 10 to grade 12 is the career orientation education stage. Accordingly, the compulsory subject system has changed compared to the 2006 general education program.

Students will study 6 compulsory subjects: Literature, Math, Foreign Language 1, History, National Defense and Security Education, and Physical Education.

In addition, 2 compulsory educational activities were added: Experiential activities, career guidance and Local educational content.

Depending on career orientation, students will choose 4 out of 9 subjects: Geography, Economic and Legal Education, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Technology, Information Technology, Music, and Fine Arts.

Before entering the new school year, 10th grade students will be able to choose a subject combination.

Although the selection of subject combinations has been carried out for 2 years, this issue has not stopped making parents and students wonder and continue to need advice from the school.

Parents worry that their children have not really found direction.

Talking to reporters of Vietnam Education Electronic Magazine, Ms. Vu Thi Thu, a parent whose child is in 10th grade this year at Tran Hung Dao High School, Thanh Xuan, Hanoi, shared:

“I myself cannot avoid confusion when choosing a subject combination for my child. Surely many other parents are like me, having consulted a lot of information online, listened to advice from TV programs, online programs about choosing a combination that is suitable for their child's future career aspirations.

In my daughter's case, she studied all subjects equally, so I wanted her to study Social Studies and take 3 subjects: Math, Literature, and English. Initially, she chose Social Studies because she listened to her mother's advice, but then her high school teacher called to give detailed advice based on her academic record.

Because I like the Natural Science group and have won an excellent student award in Math, after receiving your call, I decided to change my original plan.”

Some opinions say that, for 10th grade students, at the age of 15, they cannot really understand what they like, what they want, and what their future career direction is.

Although students will still be able to change subject combinations if they find them unsuitable, parents are also worried that having to learn new subjects from the beginning will cause difficulties for their children.

Therefore, choosing a subject combination from grade 10 needs to be carefully considered based on the students' abilities, interests and trends as well as advice from parents, teachers and schools.

Ms. Thu added: “Currently, my daughter can still change her subject group, but if she changes it at the end of the school year, entering grade 11, it will be very difficult. Because the two groups are different, there are subjects in the Social group that cannot be studied in the Natural group. Changing the group means having to learn a new subject from the beginning, which will not be easy for her to keep up with her friends.

In addition, my daughter, like many of her peers, cannot really determine her future career orientation, so she really needs advice from teachers and schools.

If all teachers carefully and enthusiastically review each student's academic records to give appropriate advice, I think inappropriate choices will be limited.

Dang Nhi Quynh, daughter of Vu Thi Thu, expressed: “When I entered grade 10, I was confused and had many concerns about choosing a subject combination.

I am confused between the Natural Science group and the Social Science group. Following the advice from everyone in my family, I initially intended to choose the Social Science group. As for my personal wishes, I want to study the Natural Science group because I already have a natural talent and good achievements in Math.

Most importantly, choosing a subject group also depends on future career orientation. My goal for myself is to do a job related to science and technology, information technology or finance and banking, business administration. Therefore, group A01 (Math, Physics, English) is very suitable.

If you feel that your current subject combination is not suitable for you, you still have the opportunity to change, but you will be at a disadvantage when you have to re-study the subjects in the new combination. Therefore, I have determined that I must increase my passion and try to pursue the chosen combination for a long time.

The school advises students to choose subject combinations according to their abilities.

Sharing with reporters, Mr. Luu Van Xuan, Principal of Ngo Si Lien High School, Bac Giang, said that the selection of subject groups for 10th grade students at the school is based on the situation of the teaching staff. The school will propose subject groups/groups and elective topics; then gather students for consultation.

For teachers, reviewing students’ academic records from previous years of secondary school to give advice is essential. Schools also rely on this to provide counseling for students, guiding them to choose groups of subjects that they had achieved good scores in in grades 8 and 9.

Parents and students are confused about choosing a subject combination, while schools have difficulty building a combination because each school has different staff.

Teacher Luu Van Xuan said: “Because the teaching staff of each school is different, it is impossible to impose the same subject combination of one school on another school, but must be based on the actual situation of each unit and teachers of each subject.

This also creates obstacles when students want to transfer schools. Students and parents must find out which schools in the same district/city have suitable elective subject combinations to apply for transfer; at the same time, they must follow the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training as well as the Department of Education and Training.

In addition, for subjects such as Fine Arts and Music, the school has requested the Department of Education and Training to mobilize teachers, but due to the lack of teachers for these two subjects, the unit cannot build a combination of these two subjects. Students with interests related to the arts do not have the opportunity to study.

In addition, the school also tries to balance the number of students in each class according to the combination. If students register for a combination that is not suitable for the school's staff, the unit will ask for guidance from the Department of Education and Training to guide students to choose a suitable class corresponding to the number of students according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

It is impossible for a class of 46 students to have one class of only 20 students, there will not be enough classrooms and teachers.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Hao, Principal of Thai Phien High School, Da Nang, informed that in the past two school years, the school has not had any students change subject combinations.

Before the new school year begins, the school will plan to build a complex, determine the number of classes, and then organize meetings with students and parents to provide consultation.

It is known that students of Thai Phien High School can choose 3 groups of subjects including: first choice, second choice, third choice in 6 groups (Natural Sciences and Social Sciences).

If the number of students registering for the selected subject groups exceeds the expected number of classes, the priority criteria for class placement is the total score of the 10th grade entrance exam or the number of students is small, not enough for a class according to regulations, depending on practical conditions, the school will arrange into 1 of the 3 subject groups that the students have chosen.

Mr. Nguyen Ba Hao said that 70% of the school's students choose the Natural Science group and 30% the Social Science group. Currently, the unit has no plan to build a subject group with two subjects: Music and Fine Arts due to lack of teachers.

Giving advice on choosing a combination for students, teacher Luu Van Xuan shared: “It's actually quite difficult to make the right choice because when students study in middle school, they may be good at these subjects, but when they go to high school, the different methods, knowledge, and class time can also cause obstacles for them.

However, most students who have really good results in middle school subjects should continue to pursue them. From there, find an effective learning method for yourself so that you are less disturbed during the process of choosing.

The school promotes and advises students to choose a subject group according to their abilities in order to best develop their strengths. Students should consult, research, and consider carefully before registering to study a group of subjects.

According to teacher Nguyen Ba Hao: “To choose the right subject combination, firstly, students must pay attention to their own abilities, strengths, interests as well as future career orientation. Second, it is based on the school's plan to study the subject combination that matches their wishes.

If parents need the school to review their child's academic records to provide appropriate advice, the school is willing to support. However, it is very difficult to check the detailed academic records of each student because this year Thai Phien High School has 2,400 10th grade students enrolled, and the unit does not have the human resources to do the above work.”

The school advises students to change their combination soon if needed.

In fact, students are still allowed to change their subject combinations. The school will also create favorable conditions to support them according to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training. However, if students change their subject combinations too late, it can cause many difficulties for both the educational institution and the students.

Teacher Nguyen Ba Hao shared: “In case students want to change their subject combinations, the school will first advise them. Except in cases of force majeure, the change will greatly affect the student's learning process.

If you still want to change, the school will continue to support you in choosing the combination that will disrupt your subjects the least, ensuring your ability to keep up with the program and helping you achieve your future career goals.

For example, students should transfer between groups of subjects within the same Natural Sciences or Social Sciences combination. When students decide to switch from Natural Sciences to Social Sciences or vice versa, they need to consider carefully.

As for the school, we will create maximum conditions and follow the instructions of the Ministry of Education and Training to support students.”

Teacher Nguyen Ba Hao added: “The beginning of the 10th grade school year is the right time if you intend to change your combination. If it's too late, it will cause difficulties for both the school and the students.

Schools need to rearrange classes appropriately, and students who have already studied halfway through will not be able to change easily, and will have to supplement knowledge of the new subject. Therefore, students should determine from the beginning of the school year to be proactive.”

The principal of Thai Phien High School also agreed that each school building different subject combinations would be a barrier for students transferring schools. Students must choose a school with a suitable subject combination.

If it doesn't match completely, you will need to calculate so as not to mix up too many subject combinations in order to quickly catch up with your classmates.

Mr. Luu Van Xuan said that at Ngo Si Lien High School, the number of students changing groups is insignificant because the school has done a good job of orientation from the beginning of the school year by carefully advising students before choosing, giving them and their families time to consult, think, and research before registering.

After the first 1 or 2 weeks of grade 10, if you feel that the combination you have chosen is not suitable for your abilities and if you wish to change, the school will fully support you.

At the end of the school year, if students want to change their elective subjects or study topics, the school will develop a plan, assign teachers to teach extra classes during the summer, and then organize an exam.

If the exam results meet the requirements, it will create conditions for students to transfer to another class with a suitable group of elective subjects.
