Civil Engineering not only provides in-depth knowledge of design and construction but also opens up many attractive career opportunities.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, with quality training programs at campuses in Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, and Da Lat, students will be fully equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in the construction field in general and in the field of Construction Engineering in particular.

Students can study Civil Engineering at the appropriate institution.

Speaking to reporters of the Vietnam Education Electronic Magazine, Associate Professor, Dr. Truong Quang Thanh, Head of the Faculty of Construction, Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, shared: Construction Engineering is a specialized field of study in consulting, designing, organizing construction, supervising and accepting civil and industrial construction works. These works include houses, offices, schools, hospitals, commercial centers, factories, train stations, stadiums, bridges, seaports, and many other items.

At Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, the Civil Engineering major is not only trained at the main campus in Ho Chi Minh City but also trained at two other campuses, Can Tho and Da Lat.

Associate Professor, Dr. Truong Quang Thanh said that at both Can Tho and Da Lat campuses, the school has invested heavily in facilities with spacious spaces and modern equipment, especially laboratories and practice rooms, meeting the needs of teaching and scientific research. The teaching staff here are all experienced teachers, ensuring the quality of training is equivalent to the main campus.

Furthermore, the cost of living in both locations is also lower than in Ho Chi Minh City, helping students save money. Only in the final semester and graduation project defense, all students at the campuses will gather at the main campus to study together.

At the Da Lat campus, because it is in the process of improving the quality of training, the number of students in a class is not large, no more than 20 students. In addition, this campus has a dormitory right on campus, helping to reduce living expenses and travel time for students.

In general, both campuses offer distinct advantages. With training programs and output standards equivalent to the main campus in Ho Chi Minh City, students applying for the Civil Engineering major at these two campuses will easily access and become full-time students of Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture.

According to Mr. Thanh, students studying Civil Engineering at the school will be equipped with general to detailed knowledge about design, construction, supervision and management of civil and industrial construction works. The curriculum includes general subjects such as Mathematics and Applied Physics, basic subjects such as Strength of Materials and Structural Mechanics, and specialized subjects on design and construction. In addition, there are also subjects on Project Management, Computer Practice, and Graduation Project.

To achieve the goal of training high-quality human resources, the Dean of the Faculty of Construction said that investment in facilities, teaching staff and training programs is very important. Lack of investment will reduce the quality of education and the competitiveness of human resources in the future. Well-trained human resources will contribute to improving the quality of life and sustainable social development.

Therefore, the school's curriculum is regularly updated to meet industry needs and new technology trends, helping students easily adapt and increase their competitiveness in the labor market after graduation.

Industry with great growth potential

Mr. Vu Duc Tai, CEO of Central Construction Joint Stock Company, said that the construction industry in general and the Construction Engineering industry in particular play an important role in society. This industry contributes to economic development, creates jobs and income for workers, and improves the quality of life through the construction of houses, schools, hospitals and other infrastructure.

In addition, safe and sustainable buildings help protect communities from natural disasters and accidents. In addition, transportation and infrastructure projects connect regions, promote trade and mobility, and encourage innovation in design and materials.

Mr. Vu Duc Tai emphasized that the Construction Engineering industry will continue to grow strongly thanks to the need for infrastructure, the application of advanced technology and the trend of sustainable development. Although other industries may be affected by the development of digital technology and reduced demand for human resources, the Construction Engineering industry still maintains an important role and certain advantages in the overall development of society.

The CEO of Central Construction Joint Stock Company also advised that, to achieve high income in the field of construction engineering, engineers need to focus on developing a series of important skills.

First is technical expertise, which includes mastering the principles of structural design and calculation, along with proficiency in CAD, BIM software and other design tools.

Project management skills are also key, requiring the ability to plan, manage time, allocate resources effectively, as well as leadership and team coordination skills. Communication skills are also important, from presenting and persuading stakeholders to communicating in a multicultural environment.

In addition, engineers need analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze data and handle situations creatively. Understanding of building codes and standards, knowledge of new technologies, sustainable design skills, and contract negotiation skills are also essential to success in the industry.

With high demand for human resources, Associate Professor, Dr. Truong Quang Thanh shared that graduates of the Civil Engineering major have many opportunities to work in different fields. First, in the field of state management, students can work in departments, offices, and sectors related to construction such as the Department of Construction, Department of Transport and project management boards.

In addition, domestic and foreign private enterprises are also attractive destinations for young construction engineers. Students can work at design companies, estimate, verify construction designs, consult and supervise construction projects, as well as at multinational corporations operating domestically and internationally.

With a passion for research and teaching, students can become researchers or lecturers at colleges and universities, or work at research institutes, centers and schools specializing in construction. Advanced study opportunities are also open to students who want to continue their interdisciplinary undergraduate studies or pursue postgraduate programs at home and abroad.

“The Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture and the Faculty of Construction have signed many cooperation agreements with major construction enterprises and professional associations such as Hoa Binh, Coteccons, Cityland, Ricons, Central, Phuoc Thanh, Victorycons, Duong Nhat, CC1, ATAD, and the Japan Construction Association. This cooperation includes the exchange of human resources and academics, helping the faculty and the school annually introduce internships for students and support a large number of graduates in finding jobs at enterprises.

In particular, with a long history of achievements in training, the Faculty of Construction has received attention and contributions from generations of alumni, creating an atmosphere of competitive learning and connecting generations of students,” said Mr. Thanh.

Cao Tuan Thuyen, a student majoring in Construction Engineering, Faculty of Construction, Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, shared that the choice to study Construction came from the thought that this industry always has a high demand for human resources, not only in the present but also in the future. Moreover, Construction Engineering is also suitable for Thuyen's abilities and strengths, especially the spirit of liking challenges and innovation, along with the ability to work in a diverse environment, facing many problems that need to be solved and being creative. Thuyen wishes to participate in the design and construction of meaningful projects, contributing positively to society.

In early August 2024, Thuyen completed her graduation thesis defense, marking an important milestone in her academic journey.

“During my studies, I realized that the school has invested heavily in facilities, creating the best conditions for students to practice. The teachers of the Faculty of Construction are very passionate and dedicated, especially in project, practice and experimental subjects. Subjects such as Construction Materials Testing, Surveying Practice, and Geomechanics are enthusiastically instructed and provided with full study materials, helping students grasp the knowledge,” Tuan Thuyen expressed.

In addition, Thuyen also appreciates the close connection between the school and the faculty with large construction companies and corporations. Thanks to that, the male student has many internship opportunities during his studies at the school. From his third year, Thuyen had the opportunity to intern at the Coteccons office and construction site, helping him accumulate much necessary experience in the industry.

Sharing about the recruitment work of the Construction Engineering major, Mr. Thanh said that the entrance score of this major at Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, especially at the main campus in Ho Chi Minh City, is always higher than that of other schools in the region with the same major.

The recruitment process at the main campus is quite favorable, however, the Can Tho and Da Lat campuses have not been as expected. According to Mr. Thanh, the main reason may be that students do not have enough information about the training program in Construction Engineering at these two campuses.

“To improve enrollment, especially at the Can Tho and Da Lat campuses, the school and faculty have come up with many specific solutions. First of all, we are constantly innovating and improving the quality of training to ensure that students have the knowledge and skills to meet the requirements of the labor market. In addition, the school also invests in facilities, creating the best learning conditions for students.

In addition, the school continues to expand cooperation with universities and businesses to improve the quality of teaching and research. Admission methods are also diversified, including direct admission, admission based on high school academic results, high school graduation exam results and competency assessment exam results.

In particular, communication and promotion of the school and training majors have also been promoted, providing widespread information to candidates about the training quality, teaching staff, and output standards of Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture at all campuses, all of which are of high and consistent quality,” the Dean of the Faculty of Construction proposed a solution.
