The Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are Google's latest high-end smartphones, introduced last August. Unlike the standard Pixel 9 that we had the chance to get our hands on before, the two Pro models mainly focus on upgrading the camera with more powerful hardware. Meanwhile, performance, battery life, and AI features are almost unchanged.

Design
Both the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL have a premium design with a matte glass back and glossy edges, creating a luxurious but slightly slippery feel when held. With Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and IP68 water resistance, the device is very resistant to impact and water. The frame is designed in a square shape, rounded at the corners, if viewed from a distance, many people may mistake this for an iPhone.
The two small Pro and Pro XL models are almost the same size as the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. The grip feels quite similar.
The frame of the device looks quite similar to the iPhone
One special thing is that Google designed these Pixels to fit the case, and when the case is installed, the camera part is almost flat with the body of the device, creating more balance and safety when using, without being too much pressure when placing the device on a flat surface.

Screen
The Pixel 9 Pro XL features a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 1344 x 2992 pixels, reaching a maximum brightness of up to 3000 nits, making it clearly visible in bright light. This display has a flexible refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz, optimized for tasks from watching movies to playing games.
The smaller Pixel 9 Pro also has an OLED display, but it's 6.3 inches. The display quality is similar to the XL. And despite being the same size as the standard Pixel 9, the smaller Pro has slightly thinner bezels, with a screen-to-body ratio of 87.6 percent.
This screen uses a mole design with a 42MP selfie camera located in the middle of the top edge of the device. This camera has an upgraded resolution compared to the 10.5MP on the standard version, and the shooting angle is also wider with a focal length of 17mm, compared to 20mm on the standard version.
In addition, all three Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL models this year are equipped with an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor under the screen, providing higher sensitivity and accuracy than conventional optical fingerprint sensors.
AI Features
The Pixel 9 series is packed with powerful AI features thanks to the Tensor G4 chip and the new Gemini AI technology. Notable features include Magic Editor (which allows for advanced photo editing, removing unwanted objects) and Pixel Screenshots (which helps understand the content of screenshots). Additionally, the Call Notes feature uses AI to automatically create call notes.
AI features related to Gemini AI have supported Vietnamese, but are not 100% complete.
In addition, the Circle to Search feature that is popular with users on Galaxy devices also appears on the Pixel 9 generation. It works similarly to Samsung phones, users activate it by holding down the gesture bar, then circling any content on the screen and Google will return search results based on that image.
The Pixel 9 series also comes with a temperature sensor, which uses a dedicated app to quickly measure body temperature. However, during our experience, it seems that this sensor is not very accurate. Maybe Google will fix this problem with an upcoming software update.
Camera
The Pixel 9 Pro XL features a 50MP main camera with 8K video recording and a large sensor, which reproduces high color and detail in good lighting conditions. It also has a 48MP ultra-wide camera and a 48MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, for impressive long-distance shooting. The selfie camera has also been upgraded to 42MP, providing sharp images with natural skin tone reproduction.
On the Pixel 9 series this time, Google has added some notable new shooting modes:
Add Me: This is a cool feature that allows users to add themselves to photos they have taken, which is great for group photos when you are the one holding the camera. The AI will analyze and automatically merge your image without losing the naturalness of the photo.
Magic Editor: This feature allows you to easily edit photos after you take them. It uses AI technology to automatically remove unwanted objects from the photo, adjust the lighting, and recreate blurred or lost details. You can also add new details or adjust the colors with just a few taps.
Pixel Studio: This is a new application that allows users to create images from scratch based on the Imagen 3 AI model. It can create scenes or objects on demand, giving users unlimited creativity.
Configuration and performance
The Pixel 9 series uses the latest Tensor G4 chip, accompanied by 16GB of RAM. In fact, this chip does not perform too strongly compared to most smartphones in the same price range. We tested it with AnTuTu Benchmark software and the device gave a rather modest score, only about 800,000 points, for the XL version it can reach about 1 million points, showing that the performance level is only on par with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a chip released 2 years ago.
The Pixel 9 Pro also gets warm when playing heavy games. The 5,060mAh battery on the Pixel 9 Pro XL can be used comfortably for a day, but the charging speed of only 37W can make users dissatisfied because it takes a long time to fully charge. For the small Pro version, the battery capacity of the device is 4,700mAh with 27W fast charging. The charger is not included with the device, users will have to buy it separately or make use of old chargers.
Google pre-installs the latest Android 14 operating system on all 3 Pixel 9 models this year with a commitment to 7 consecutive years of software updates.
In Vietnam, the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL duo are currently priced quite high, around 24 million VND and 31 million VND respectively. This price is approaching the price of the newly launched iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Unfortunately, the Pixel product line is not yet officially sold in the Vietnamese market.
