Anti-shock circuit breaker used for 1 phase: people let 2 wires, cool and fire, pass through a current transformer with a toroidal iron core. This is a regular toroidal core transformer with a primary coil of 1 wire turn (which is 2 wires of cool and fire going through the center of the transformer) and a secondary coil of a few dozen turns of wire. As we know: the currents going out from the hot wire to the cool wire (and vice versa: from the cool wire to the hot wire) are in opposite directions, which means that the changing magnetic fields they create in the iron core of the current transformer are in opposite directions.

If these two currents are equal, the two fluctuating magnetic fields will cancel each other, making the output voltage of the secondary coil of the current transformer = 0. If the voltage through the two wires is leaky, the current on the two wires is different, two fluctuating magnetic fields are generated in different iron cores, causing an induced current to appear on the secondary coil of the current transformer. This current is fed into the IC to check if it is greater than the safe leakage current? If greater than 15mA, for example, the IC will supply power to the Triac to power the Aptomat’s suction coil.

To detect large leakage currents of several hundred mA, there is no need to use an IC (because the IC circuit is complex and high cost), but immediately use the electromagnetic force created when current flows in the coil to turn on and off the circuit breaker.

4. Technical specifications of anti-shock circuit breaker, anti-leak circuit circuit breaker

Anti-shock circuit breakers are divided into two basic types: those with only anti-shock function (RCCB) and those with overload protection function (RCBO, ELCB). Depending on each type, there may be all or some technical specifications as follows:

  • AT : Ampere Trip (impact current).
  • AF : Frame Ampere (frame current). For example, NV250-SV 3P 200A 36kA 30mA and NV250-SV 3P 250A 36kA 30mA both have AF = 250A but one will operate when the current exceeds AT = 200A, the other will operate when the current exceeds AT = 250A. The AT/AF parameter indicates the durability of the switching contact.

For example, the ELCB 250AT/400AF anti-shock circuit breaker will have higher durability than the 250AT/250AF circuit breaker. The size of the 400AF anti-shock circuit breaker is also larger and the price is higher.

  • Mechanical / electrical endurace : Number of mechanical switching times allowed / number of electrical switching times allowed.

6. Instructions for choosing anti-shock circuit breaker and anti-leak circuit circuit breaker

When choosing an anti-shock Aptomat, you need to pay attention to the following issues to avoid making the wrong choice and not being able to use it:

6.1. Select anti-shock circuit breaker by type

Anti-shock circuit breaker with overload protection function (RCBO, ELCB) can be used to replace regular circuit breaker, but because of its more complex structure, this type usually has low short-circuit current. Using RCBO, ELCB after the circuit breaker will often protect the electrical system better. Aptomats with only anti-shock function (RCCB) are required to be installed after regular aptomats.

6.2. Select by number of phases/number of poles

The most common mistake is choosing a 3-phase (3-pole) anti-shock circuit breaker to install in a 3-phase mixed load system (1-phase load, 3-phase load, neutral use) leading to the anti-shock circuit breaker jumping. For mixed 3-phase loads, a 4-phase anti-shock circuit breaker must be used (also known as 3-phase 4-pole, 3P + N). For single-phase electricity (1 phase wire + 1 neutral wire), a 2-phase circuit breaker must be used (1 phase 2 poles, 1P + N). 3-phase 3-pole anti-shock circuit breaker can only be used for 3-phase 3-wire loads without neutral like 3-phase motors.

6.3. Select by rated line

For RCBO, ELCB chooses the rated current based on the used capacity similar to choosing a regular circuit breaker. For anti-shock circuit breaker without RCCB overload protection, choose a rated current equal to or greater than the rated current of circuit board normally installed with the RCCB.

6.4. Select according to leakage current

Anti-shock circuit breaker usually has 3 types according to leakage current 15mA, 30mA, 100/200/500mA. Normally, small systems and residential areas use 30mA leak-proof circuit breaker. Large capacity production areas often use 100/200/500mA leak-proof circuit breaker.

  • Do not use in wet places. When installing an anti-shock circuit breaker for a water heater, you should choose a location outside the bathroom.
  • Must test before use. Test at least once a month to check if the device is still working well?
